I am not "affected" by current, historical, and ongoing events because I am sensitive, loving, have a big heart or am even particularly empathetic. (These aren't incredibly accurate descriptions of me, actually.)

You are not less affected because you lack these qualities, necessarily.

You are less affected because you're less affected. You're not as impacted, or you're unaware of how impacted you are.

Those who are less affected are similar to those who are free of allergies. They can meander, consume, and produce without any need for consideration. They are not vigilant due to a system that claims to protect them but leaves them in anaphylactic shock.

I don't need you to use emotional responses to empathize with my allergic reaction. I need you to recognize that I'm affected: I'm in immediate danger.

Less affected people often get so intoxicated by the idea of equality and progress that they neglect to take a look at the current reality. Less affected people romanticize the hope for the future and mistake it for the here and now.

Less affected people lean into self-soothing techniques when faced with discomfort and attempt to solve the problems of the affected by soothing them. It's all they know.

If you find yourself less affected, the best response is to get more affected. Ask me how.
